# FAQs - Missionary Outline
## Is this a paper?
No, this assignment is not a paper. It is an expanded outline and annotated bibliography.
While it is not a full paper, it is a formal academic research assignment. You are required to use Turabian format, including a cover page, proper citations and footnotes as needed, etc. in accordance with Turabian writing style. For resources concerning Turabian format, consult the Writing Center's resources on the SEBTS Library website (library.sebts.edu).
See the next question for more information about the expanded outline.
## What is an expanded outline?
An expanded outline is a detailed outline that includes your thesis statement, main points, and supporting points, all written in complete sentences rather than phrases. It is more thorough than a basic outline but is not a fully written paper. Your expanded outline should include an introduction with your thesis and an advanced organizer, and each point and subpoint should be a complete sentence. In a research paper, these would serve as the topic sentences for each paragraph.
This assignment is designed to help you develop your research writing skills by organizing both your ideas and supporting evidence. For help with any unfamiliar terms, please consult the Writing Center resources available on Southeastern's Library webpage (library.sebts.edu).
## Do I still have to cite my sources?
Yes. If you use a direct quotation in your expanded outline, it will need a footnote. If you do not directly use a source, it is okay not to cite it with a footnote. However, in your annotated bibliography (see below) you need to explain how each source will support your outline. There, indicate the different points or subpoints which will be supported by any given source.
Even though this is not a traditional paper, it is still a formal academic research assignment. Therefore, you must still cite all sources used, following Turabian style. This includes providing citations for direct quotes and any information taken from your research sources. A cover page and proper citations are required as part of this formal academic assignment.
## Do I need to use Turabian style? If so, what applies?
Yes, you must use Turabian style for this assignment.
This assignment should be written using Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and double-spacing. Include a cover page, and start your annotated bibliography on a new page at the end. See the previous question for specific guidelines for citing sources. Use proper citations and footnotes as needed. If you have questions about Turabian style, the Writing Center offers in-person and remote assistance, as well as online resources at Southeastern’s Library webpage (library.sebts.edu).
## What is the page count for this assignment?
There is no set page count or limit for this assignment. Instead, you are expected to provide a substantial expanded outline, with each point and subpoint being written as a complete sentence, so that your outline could be developed into a full paper. Focus on thoroughly covering the life and ministry of your missionary rather than meeting a specific length requirement.
# FAQS - Annotated Bibliography
## What types of sources can we use for this assignment?
You must use at least five (5) *academic* sources for this assignment. Academic sources are written by field experts, often reviewed by peers, designed to objectively educate the reader, and are informed by other credible sources. Examples of academic sources include scholarly books, journal articles, and dissertations. For help finding academic sources, visit the SEBTS Library website ([library.sebts.edu](https://library.sebts.edu)) or contact the Library staff via email (
[email protected]).
Examples of non-academic sources would include blog articles, Wikipedia, or many online encyclopedias. In general, if you just found it through a Google search, and it isn't clearly peer-reviewed, I would warn caution on considering it an academic source.
